I have known Xxx for more than 5 years now,firstly as a student on the MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second LanguageAcquisition and then as my supervisee on a doctoral programme in the departmentof Education which he has now successfully completed. I have also producedEnglish Language Teaching materials for Chinese students in collaboration withhim. So I know him very well.
Xxx has been an excellent student of thisdepartment. He has a capacity for hard work and for methodically pursuing hisgoals. The data that he collected on teacher codeswitching patterns in Chineseuniversities is innovative and probably the best corpus of data of its type tobe found. He then used this data to produce a very good thesis which addressedthe issue of use of first language in the second language classroom from anumber of perspectives. His use of stimulated recall in order to elicit thestrategic reaction of students to teacher codeswitching was also highlyinnovative and, I am quite sure, could form the basis of an excellent articlein an international refereed journal.
Xxx is also an excellent student because healways listens carefully to advice and acts upon it. In that sense he is a truereflective practitioner, constantly wanting to improve himself in the field ofteaching and learning a second language.
He has done a number of presentations ofhis work in the department and these have always been very clear, cleverlycommunicated, and well received by peers and staff alike.
When we worked on the teaching materials hedisplayed an understanding of how to put theoretical and research evidence intopractice. He clearly has the makings of very good teacher of English although, of course, I have not actuallyseen him teach.
I can thoroughly recommend him as areliable, punctual and honest person. In whatever work situation he foundhimself I am confident that he would strive for the highest of standards.
